About SYYC
The yo-yo is no longer a kid’s toy that only moves up and down. Today, spinning the yo-yo has evolved into more than just the basic tricks like “Rock the baby” and “Walk the dog”. It is about putting the ever-spinning yo-yos through long-lasting sequences of leaps, bounces, and swings, on and even off the string.
Yo-yoing has gone extreme.
The popularity of yo-yoing has always been fluctuating between years. With the upcoming Singapore Yo-yo Championships (SYYC) that will be held on the 9th and 10th of June 2007 at Downtown East, it is no doubt that the yo-yo craze will be back.
Being held for the fifth time since 2003, this unique competition is organized mainly by a group of youths from Yo-yo Association of Singapore (YYAS) and Spinworkx (a skilled-toy company that nurture yo-yo talents). “The organizing committee is made up of only seven members including myself”, said Mr. Nurali, 24, President of YYAS. “We all volunteered to be involved in this event and most of us are still schooling”.
Yo-yoing also explores one’s creativity to the fullest. Many yo-yo enthusiasts enjoy improvising standard tricks and inventing new tricks to share with their friends. The yo-yo players are limited only by their own creativity.
The upcoming Singapore Yo-yo Championships 2007 promises a session of visual feast. For the love of this sport, yo-yo enthusiasts ranging from children to teenagers and even adults come together on this special day to learn from each other and to share their joy in yo-yoing.
This event provides a platform for an exciting display of single-handed complex string tricks, double-handed, counter-weight division (where string is not attached to the finger) and off- string (where the yoyo is not attached to the string).
A series of road shows will be conducted on 26th and 27th of May at Downtown East before the championships. There will be performances by local teams who will be competing in this year’s SYYC. These road shows will give public audience a preview of what to expect from the upcoming competition.
So let’s say “Yo” together and get in the swings of things this coming June!
